Here are some more things you should look at relating to our first class:

English folk group 'Show of Hands' sing about their 'Roots'.

And another critical view of Multiculturalism.

The BBC is, predictably, more upbeat.

Academic Writing Meeting 2 Both Groups

Next week, on the 18th, we shall be writing an essay, or rather, you will be writing an essay. It will be a discursive essay of around 300-350 words. The choice of topics will be as follows:

1: What is education for?
2: Are all men equal?
3: How should the poor be helped?

Decide what you want to write about and think of your main arguments. Try to consider what obvious objections those arguments might face. Do not write your essay beforehand - come prepared to write it in class!

I have asked about moving the room but I'm not sure with what success. We'll find out on Sunday...

British Culture Class 1

One view of immigration into Britain, from Migrationwatchuk.org:

SIX KEY FACTS

Net immigration has quadrupled since 1997 to 237,000 a year.

A migrant now arrives nearly every minute.

We must build a new home every six minutes for new migrants.

England is already the most crowded country in Europe (except Malta)

Immigration will add 7 million to the population of England in the next 20 years - that is 7 times the population of Birmingham.

To keep the population of the UK below 70 million, immigration must be reduced by 75%. Government measures so far may reduce it by 5%.
